Pop Quizzes Are Unfair

Pop quizzes have always been a dreaded possibility for students. Recently, in writing class, a pop quiz was handed out and many students failed. The point now in question is whether the grade should be put into the gradebook to be held against the class. Through the evidence provided here, it will be undeniable that the grade should not be put in the gradebook. Due to the fact that students were not given time to look over the material on their own, and even the most hard-working students’ grades will be skewed from a quiz in which very few students were able to get a C, is evidence to show the grade should not be counted against the class. For some students, time to look over the material taught in class at their own pace is critical to success. Time to think about what has been taught and process what was discussed in the lecture, can greatly increase a child’s chance to pass an assessment, but they were not given this time. If a student can go through it on their own, they can determine what aspects they seem to be struggling with and go to someone for help. This can also allow the student to go at their own pace. Though it is an attempt to teach the students a lesson, this is not the way to do it. The pop quiz and the essay were enough for a first warning. Going any further would only be unfair due to the fact that now, students will take it more seriously if they were not paying attention, and students who were paying attention will now be able to expect the possibility of a pop quiz instead of blanking out. The students have all already learned something from this experience, whether or not they payed attention, therefore, the students do not have to get hurt to understand.
