Pop Quiz Experiments In Schools

After reading chapter 3, 4 and 5 from Carey (2014) I feel like I can do better for the new school year. One recommendation that I would suggest to the administrators in school is to create a schedule of days where the students can take pop quizzes based on the material learned and material that will come after that day, and make those quizzes cumulative. On page 88, Carey (2014) describes the Spitzer’s experiment “the largest pop quiz experiment in history.” The conclusion of Spitzer suggest that when students take a quiz or test immediately, they learn and retain the information and need to be employed frequently (Carey, 2014). I have talked with teachers that suggest state tests (or district tests) too much work, and sometimes, a waste of time, and Carey mentioned something similar in Chapter 5. However, each test can work as an additional study session (Carey, …show more content…
To be successful of doing pop quizzes each week, each department need to sit, talk and create the specific quiz for each class offered at the school. The administration needs to create a schedule for each class on when the pop quiz will be offered to students. And finally, each teacher need to evaluate the quiz, grade them and make a report for the department and for the administration.

Other recommendation that I suggest is to have the same environment for pre-test and post-test. In our district and school, we have to offer pre-test at the beginning of each block and the final (post-test) at the end of each block. This is to see the growth in our students. But the environment and time for during the pre-test is not the same as the environment and time on the post-test. The pre-test needs to be offered during class period sometime during the first two weeks of class. Carey (2014) describe a study of a Steven M. Smith, which found that the students who took a test with the same environment as they study got better

According to Diane Ravitch’s book, Reign of Error, there are several way to preserve and restore America’s public schools. The solution by Ravitch that I was most intrigued was sparing standardized testing in early grades. I teach 5th grade. Througout the school year, my students take a benchmark test at the beginning, middle, and end of year, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, and the Georgia Milestones. This does not include the weekly content assessments which are used to determine students’ mastery of skills.…

I stand before you today to discuss the overuse of standardized testing. Children of these upcoming generations have it engrained in their minds that it is imperative that they prepare themselves for a schooling system with multitudes of tests. Children in these schooling systems are required by law to take standardized tests to represent their currents school. While this is seems beneficial to be funding; parents are not able to perceive how the school and teachers are attempting to construct this into the children’s schedules. Teachers are not only piling on the word for the kids preparing for these tests, but are also forcing all of this knowledge that in a short period of time onto these students.…

Standardized “... tests have tended to lean heavily on easily scorable multiple-choice questions that stress memory rather than understanding” (Jehlen, 1). So, when a child or teen takes these tests it does not matter if they understand what they’re doing, just as long as they got the right answer. This is completely unacceptable, they need to be tested over their understanding of a…

In the years of 2017-18, there has been much debate about how early middle-high schools should start. Several middle and high schools have already pushed their school start times back to 10:00-11:00. The result: many benefits ranging from congenial health to high test scores. These schools have become more successful, and the students more jubilant.…

During the indigenous/Native American week, there were many relations and new things that I learned throughout the week. From chapter nine in the Wayne Au book I learned that everyone has a different way of growing up and we all need to embrace where we came from. What I learned the most about that week we all have to love ourselves and who we are. If it was not for our generation before us we would not where we are today and that already is such a huge success because other countries do not the life we are living today. Native Americans were know as “ different” because they their lifestyle was different growing up such as: hunting, the dancing culture and the tongues.…

However while these tests when only taking about an hour to take are using instruction time for test preparation. For example, “many schools imposed extra measures to avoid being shut down, including daily two and a half hour prep sessions and test practice on vacation days” (ProCon). Since testing scores are so important to schools they put test preparation above anything else. Furthermore the tests are expensive.…

‘Test the Nation’ is a live television quiz show. The format is designed to allow viewers to answer a number of questions in order to measure their IQ or their ability in some other 'intellectual' area. Two hosts present 60 questions in front of a studio audience, a group of celebrities and the viewers at home. The studio audience who answer the questions along with the viewer, is broken down into fun categories often designed to challenge or affirm stereotypes. For example, in the United Kingdom, white-van men and fashion models are commonly thought to be less intelligent, whilst doctors and scientists are expected to score highly.…

Learning life skills will teach students to be more self-relying rather than always depending on others. Classes that teach these life skills will be more beneficial to students in their future rather than learning to take a test. We should be focusing more on all the subjects rather than on the two most prioritized subjects such as math and reading. Math and reading scores are usually the only two scores that colleges look at when looking over the test you took. “Standardized tests discourage creativity, innovation, problem-solving, and high level thinking skills” ().…
