The experiment was also designed to help researchers determine how the song influences political and social attitudes (directly with persuasion or indirectly). The experiment itself consisted of four different conditions. The first and second conditions consisted of a group of people listening to the song with the lyrics posted on a screen and another group listening to the song without the lyrics posted on the screen. The third condition consisted of another group of people listening to the instrumental version of the song (not hearing or seeing the lyrics), and the forth condition was a control group that did not listen to the song and just provided a simple explanation comparing the effects of the song. The results of the experiment were very interesting. The medium of live performance is another way artists spread important messages about social and political issues. This medium is shown in John Legend’s performance of his song “Glory” to spread awareness of the importance of Martin Luther King’s historical march to Selma, Alabama for equality in addition to stressing the importance that we need to continue to fight for equality in our society today. The medium of live performance is also shown in Beyoncé’s performance of “I Was Here” at the United Nations World Humanitarian Day in 2012 where she helped spread awareness of the importance of helping others by displaying images and videos of people helping others around the world as she performed.
