What is the difference between Abstract Art and Pop Art? Abstract Art does not necessarily mean anything or is supposed to represent anything. Artists who were a part of this movement, were free to create anything they wanted, including any kinds of shapes, colors, and lines. At first, people thought Abstract Art was ugly and that art should have some type of theme, meaning, or clear object. Eventually, people begin to like the idea of Abstract Art and actually started to enjoy it. Abstract Art styles are still used today and has led to the creation of a few other styles too. Pop Art was created in the 1950's in the United States and Britain. The beautifully wise words of an American painter, Robert Motherwell, could not have described abstract art any better I strongly believe. He intricately and sophisticatedly describes the breath-taking style of abstract art as follows, “The function of abstraction is to get rid of a lot of reality. You start with as much richness as you want, and subtract, and then you arrive at the residue of essences that you’re interested in.” This description really allows the reader to visualize the artist at the canvas, slapping the paint on and then every so carefully stripping away the perfect amount to acquire the goal and portray the image in their brains. I love the amount of visualization Motherwell allows, and encourages the viewer to experience.…

Figure 4.16, Cranes by Ogata Korin. This folding screen is one of two, and was created around the year 1700, using ink and colors over gold and silver leaf on paper. This functional work of art really stood out to me because of its simplicity. The repetition and rhythm of this piece is interesting because of the subtle variety of the cranes. No two are exactly alike if you look closely and that adds to the works grandeur.…
