The poem by Philip Levine is called, “What Work Is” which will sound familiar since the world already knows what working hard is and most people have parents that work. In the poem, “What Work Is” it talks about how people have to go through their daily lives going to work every day, feeling they are doing the same routine every day. In the excerpt Cheating in a Bottom-line Economy from his book The Cheating Culture, David Callahan takes a close look at the changing moral values of workers when they are forced to worry about profit over anything else. When upper management puts the pressure of making money on the workers instead of handling it themselves unintended consequences can happen. For many people, work has taken up most of their lives. Most interact with coworkers more than they see their family.…

This first example of Wes Moore’s life teachings is “But hard work and putting in the effort to be good at something matters” (Moore 142). According to Klemens, an intensified commitment to work not only emerges as life’s devotion, but a passion to ones “calling”. Furthermore, I agree with the claim that the work ethic is “firmly entrenched as a powerful and valued American social trait”. Hard work and dedication is the focus of Americans. Most people have become oblivious to how…

Throughout history, women have been oppressed in comparison to men. Women were seen as emotional beings, whose job was to take care of the home and children. As time moved on men gained more rights and power, such as getting formal educations and getting the right to vote, while women were in a stalemate. Seth Rockman, author of the book Scraping By, provides evidence that helps support the idea that women were unable to get ahead in Balitimore. In the early nineteenth century, working women were faced with boundaries that restricted them from prospering and getting ahead.…

In her essay, "It's Not Talent; It's Just Work", Annie Dillard argues that, in order to achieve success, the concept of "work" must be fully embraced, and not discounted as being secondary to "talent" or "luck". Consequently, Dillard directs her readers to "[l]earn something first" and goes on to explain that learning is the first step in loving and once a task is viewed with love, it is no longer simply "work". While it is an indisputable fact that everyone must perform some sort of work in order to survive, that is not necessarily a life sentence of tedium. Learning, and the pursuit of information, are what remove the drudgery from work and inspire excellence.…

Benjamin Franklin believed that every person can become more wealthy, healthy, and wise through hard work and self discipline. I believe in his belief because it doesn’t matter how difficult or easy it is to accomplish a goal; at the end of the day, what counts is the satisfaction of the work and experience a person puts into it. Franklin didn’t favor luck or opportunities, but instead became successful through hard work. Franklin was many things such as an author, inventor, scientist, and a printer.…

In today 's social-sharing, instant-communication and litigious ecosphere, even the most scrupulous and painstaking management practices can fall short of anticipating and preventing all risks. Society evolves with each passing year aiming to get more and more advanced, but doing so has caused people to lose sight of what is truly important; themselves. Way back in the ancient times people worked harder of course because they lacked machines to do the work for them, but even though the people worked tirelessly on a daily basis they knew how to live freely. Most people would argue this saying that “we are free”, but are they right or are they simply falling under a spell that life would be better if less work was put into it? People become fascinated with these new gadgets and will do anything to obtain them, but even though most people would not question what was really happening, few do their best to prove the others wrong.
