The current understanding of ADHD is rather different from yester year when it was perceived by George Still in 1902 as a defect in moral character arguing that children with the disorder did not have the ability to internalize rules and limits perhaps as a result of some brain damage or as seen by Douglas and Peters (1979) as a deficit of attention. Some scholars from yester year simply saw it as a result of poor parenting. Whilst these theories have since been thrown out by modern scholars among them Barkley (1997), they formed the basis of the current understanding of ADHD.
