Josh, the manager of the warehouse at ABC Inc., calls a new worker into his office, Phil. Josh is concerned that Phil is not performing his job the way he was trained. When Phil arrives at Josh’s office, Josh proceeds to ask why certain tasks aren’t being completed. Before Josh has a chance to discuss the issues, Phil interrupts and asks if he is being fired. Josh tells him that is not the case and he just wants to figure out what is wrong. As Josh is explaining specific incidences that he is upset about, Phil is concerned about how he is going to pay for his rent this month. Josh finishes talking and wants feedback from Phil. When he asks why certain tasks aren’t being done, Phil responds that he was not trained properly. Instead of discussing how Josh could help, Phil criticizes Josh for not being able to relate to his warehouse workers because managers don’t ever care or understand the workers’ conditions. Chase is new to the firm and Sarah is in charge of training him. Chase is from Puerto Rico; he speaks English well, but doesn’t understand some of the southern phrases and accents that are well known in the area. At the end of the day, Sarah sits down with Chase and gives feedback on how he worked all day. Sarah begins by telling Chase what a great job he did working at a fast but efficient pace. She then begins to explain that he needs to work on better communicating with other coworkers on what he is doing so that everyone in the department is on the same page. She then tells him what the next couple days will entail. “Y’all are going to be working on going through client files because the company is fixin’ to switch to a new software program,” Sarah tells Chase before he leaves to go home.
