The gang goes through high and low together and they are as close as brothers, but their origins are unclear, why did they need to have a gang even though they had great parents? Throughout the book Ponyboy lays hints about how the gang came to be. These clues are concentrated in the expositions and spread in the rest of the book. If these clues are analyzed, it can be inferred that there are three different things that caused the gang to exist. These clues tell about their relationships of friendship, community’s culture, and their past events. Their friendship though, is why those are the members of the gang and not others and also is part of the gang’s creation. This could have led them to be a gang instead of close friends who help each other out. You can see that it’s part of their overall culture to have gangs when it says this “Greasers are almost like hoods; we steal things and drive old souped-up cars and hold up gas stations and have a gang fight once in a while.”(Hinton Digital 4). That could have given them a push from a friendship to a gang. It also show them know like “Tim Shepard’s Gang” (Hinton Digital 10) they also see gangs as a closer friendship in culture like when Ponyboy says “organized gangs are rarities--- there are just small bunches of friends who stick together, and the warfare is between the social classes.” (Hinton Digital 10). They wouldn’t need to be a gang and wouldn’t have been if not for circumstance. You can see lot of change happened when their parents died like in this sentence “He didn 't use to be like that... we used to get along okay... before Mom and Dad died. Now he just can 't stand me.”(Hinton Digital 45) so with their parents dying they bonded closer with their parents. It also hints throughout the book that they loved their parents so they would be devastated. It was not only Ponyboy’s problem that brought them together, but also the gangs. It says “ I was thinking about Johnny 's father being a drunk and his mother a selfish slob, and Two-Bit 's mother being a barmaid to support him and his kid sister after their father ran out on them--- Steve--- his hatred for his father coming out in his soft, bitter voice and the violence of his temper.”(Hinton Digital 38). This shows that every one of the gang had their own set of problems that tied them together into a gang. These 3 factors of friendship, culture, and circumstance tied them together into a gang born of friendship and not hate. They each solved the other problems and stuck for each other as a gang. The circumstance, culture, and friendship may have been what made them a gang, but that was not what made them stays as a gang. It was their love that was created and understanding is what kept them as gang. This developed into a loyalty that each gang member would
