Ponyboy was really the first person I could express my opinions to and the first person I could really talk to about how I feel about this stupid social division we have to go by. Even though he doesn’t really understand how we Socs have problems too, I can see that he at least sort of understands- not completely, but just a little… Knowing that he sort of understands is a mixed feeling of relief and just a bit of an absurd feeling as well, I mean, a Soc and a greaser actually having a nice conversation..I didn’t expect him to actually understand at all, but I also didn’t expect him to be completely ignorant about it either.

The tension infuriated and grew inside. I was not going to hear another one of his excuses. “A little? You call reeling and passing out in the streets 'a little'? Bob, I told you, I'm never going out with you while you're drinking, and I mean it. Too many things could happen while you're drunk. It's me or the booze,” I snapped at him. Marcia was giving Randy a cold look.
"And even if you are mad at us, that's no reason to go walking the streets with these bums,” Randy blurted in anger. This is what started to exasperate the greasers, they looked mean, tough and cold. As Two-Bit flipped out his switchblade, encouraging them to fight, I couldn’t just stand and watch them fight each other. It wasn’t right for them to fight over something as dumb as this whole “greasers versus Socs”
