2,000 years ago, Pompeii was a big city with a population of 20,000 people. It was very busy and was located on the Sarnus River, near the Bay of Naples, about 130 miles south of Rome. The town was located in the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius. Rich landowners built elegant houses there. Vesuvius had been asleep for 800 years so nobody thought it would erupt. Vesuvius had solid lava on the top of it so all the lava inside built up and made the volcano erupt. The fumes and ashes suffocated many people. For centuries Pompeii lay in its ashy grave. Finally, in 1763, Pompeii was uncovered revealing many goods, riches, and skeletons preserved in ash. Pompeii has been open to the public for more than 250 years. Today it is a great tourist attraction and consider yourself luck to visit the ruins. Nobody knew Vesuvius was a volcano until it erupted. It has not erupted since 1944 during WW2.
