Prose Comparison - European Baccalaureate 2016 Both prose pieces revolve around a common event: the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in Pompeii. On the one hand, Passage b) recalls the eruption from the present time - an article published in The Guardian - whereas Passage a) narrates the incident in real time - an extract from the novel Naples ‘44. However, these two pieces of prose do not appear to concern themselves with the same eruption. Passage a) relates to the eruption during the Roman Empire in 79AD, whereas Passage b) relates to the eruption in 1944.…

As you walk the streets of pompeii, there are hundreds of people that surround you screaming, pushing, falling, panicking, all trying to escape the volcanic ash as Mount Vesuvius erupts completely burying the city of pompeii. From every direction as you listen, you can hear the sounds of terror, buildings collapsing, the ground rumbling, and the overturning of all the markets, but through it all, your hand is raised to your ear in search of the one who’s voice you fell in love with, Glaucus. As the commotion scares you as well as others and as your heart is blinder than your eyes,, you cannot see the chaos as it falls because your eyes see nothing but darkness and for that you are Nydia the blind flower girl of pompeii. Randolph Rogers’s sculptor of Nydia was inspired by the novel called The Last Days of Pompeii by Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1834.…
Jeremy Sabloff’s Archaeology Matters: Action Archaeology in the Modern World (2008) is an important text to consider in today’s world, and a text to help us understand how archaeology is not just understanding the past, but it expands on the possibility of helping humans understand our future. Carrying the concept of masculine dominance out of the Pompeian brothels and into the homes of wealthy individuals in Pompeii, we come to a small golden bracelet left behind on the body of a female victim of the eruption of Vesuvius. In her article On Reading the Material Culture of Ancient Sexual Labor, Baird discusses the significance and some of the potential meanings behind a golden serpent shaped coil bracelet found on a woman’s corpse, presumably that of a slave. Etched on the inside of the bracelet is DOMNUSANCILLAESUAE and is uncommon due to the master’s desire to say not only that she was a slave, but that she was specifically his slave, whilst not explicitly stating who he was (Baird 168). This bracelet having been found on an individual…

Examining the process of archaeology in the dictatorial contexts of authoritarianism and totalitarianism, this essay proposes that archaeology under dictatorship involves significant ethical challenges, which require important reflexivity on the part of practicing archaeologists. This is specifically seen with an examination of the way in which the Nazi regime made use of archaeology so as to perversely support its notions of racial purity, the essay moves forward to note the ethical elements of archaeology under dictatorship. Archaeologists face difficult decisions in which an oppressive regime can use archaeological findings for the purpose of oppression. The essay then moves onto the destruction of archaeological sites due to dictatorship.…
Agency Theory in Archaeology Contemporary archaeological inquiry has situated itself under the umbrella of anthropology, an open marriage to many different ways of analyzing material culture; as it gives insight to both the physical world, as well as the social-cultural world. In this paper, I will discuss some of the beginnings to this union, and specifically the theory of agency as it relates to archaeological analysis. I enter into the debate among archaeology scholars by proposing that the theory of agency is a useful paradigm to the analysis of material culture, and adds a dimension beyond the artifacts of the past themselves - deepening the analysis and understanding. It is apparent after many years of the development of archeological…
