Pomegranate Tree In The Kite Runner

In Khaled Hosseini's ¨Kite Runner¨ book, Amir and Hassan create a brotherly friendship while living with each other. Even though their social status in Kabul, Afghanistan says they are suppose to discriminate against each other because of their culture and race, they still have a friendly relationship. The two kids have a special spot underneath the pomegranate tree, where they hangout together. Throughout the book, the author, Hosseini, used the pomegranate tree to symbolize Amir and Hassan´s friendship, and the city of Kabul. First, the friendship of Amir and Hassan causes the pomegranate tree to slowly die. The pomegranate tree symbolizes the city of Kabul as a whole country throughout the book, good and bad. Before Hassan was raped, the pomegranate tree was thriving with fruit. “After school, Hassan and I climbed its branches and snatched its blood red pomegranates. After we'd eaten the fruit and wiped our hands on the grass, I would read to Hassan,” (Hosseini, 28). Later in life, after the rape, Amir comes back to the city when Hassan is dead. Their friendship has been long gone, and the city is taken over by the Taliban. Amir sees the tree has the carvings from when they were young, but it is now fading away. ¨Hassan had said in his letter that the pomegranate tree had not borne fruit in years. Looking at the wilted, leafless tree, I doubted it ever would again,¨ (Hosseini, 264). When Amir and Hassan's relationship was like a brotherhood, the tree was thriving and the city of Kabul was like paradise. When Amir and Hassan ended their friendship and Hassan moved away, the pomegranate tree started to die, along with the City of Kabul because the Taliban took
