On February 6 of 2018, at 11:00 a.m. in room 1043 of Thomas Cole Research building, Sade Rhodes spoke about the characterization of lignin-coated cellulose nanocrystals (C-CNCs) as a reinforcing agent in polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites. The logistics of the seminar that was most enjoyable was when the speaker focused on the matter of Nanocelluloses. She provided a lot of information on this topic and I understand how it related to her topics in her research. However, the only part that I did not like about the speaker’s presentation was that there was not enough information on polypropylene nanocomposites. Without the background of the polypropylene provided, I could not comprehend exactly how this material was so significant following her research. I believe if the speaker gave more insight on that subject then I could actually perceive the importance of polypropylene and why it would become so expensive after certain amount of years. Overall the speaker did answer some of the questions that I had asked through her future work and conclusion of her research. The only thing I would still be curious about is if the speaker’s approach doesn’t work will she be open minded to try a different approach from other researches to see what would result. In the presentation there is a brief explanation of polypropylene, yet for there to be an extensive variety of applications that are produced when involving polypropylene only three were mentioned. There would need to be an elaboration as to what type of tacticity the material and crystallinity is found in these materials. Furthermore, any additional information on why polypropylene is considered the most significant plastic, consisting of revenues anticipated to exceed, would need to be provided as more background information to comprehend the speaker’s

Strengths: Mike Biddle presents many strengths in his presentation such as how he captivates the audience in the beginning by helping them visualize how younger children perceive things around them and how they always want more. He adds a humoristic tone in his introductory statements but quickly gears the audience to a more serious outlook about recycling. He goes into depth about how 90 percent of the stuff that we recycle is reused for other purposes which makes the audience agree with him that recycling is beneficial. He then was able to talk about how plastic is a valuable material and only five percent of it is recycled. I think he did a good job talking about how we recycle metals more than we do plastics which emphasizes that we’re not recovering valuable materials that is harder to obtain.…

Each and every recyclable plastic has a number identity depending on the type of plastic additives it has inside. The identity indicates which plastics can be sorted to be recycled together because different numbered indicators melt at different temperatures and have different additives in it. This identity creates some issues in recycling plastics in the their facilities limiting the kinds of plastics they can recycle. Cernansky says “But not all plastic can be recycled, and only about 6.8 percent of the total plastic used in the U.S. actually goes that route” (Cernansky 1) in general it is very difficult to have plastic recycled properly. The topic’s that she had presented had a direct, real-life scenario included that people encounter every day in their professional lives. Having said this, the transition between topic and story was somewhat hurried from my perspective, and the transitions were more nuanced than direct. If I were tasked with this speech, I would have more involved the audience with questions about how they manage people in their professional lives, and then offered feedback. The speech was set in stone, with no variance from the audience; the speaker did include a wide range of scenarios and the concrete structure did work very well. Overall, it appears that this woman is very adept in speaking to a group of people, not only in her delivery, but also in her attitude and personal style.…
