Although the Gloria is second in the text set, Du Fay’s contributions to the Polyphonic Mass Ordinary are second to none. Missa Se la Face ay Pale, composed in 1453, continued the trend of using pre-existing composition for a starting point. The unique facet in Missa Se la Face ay Pale is that, Du Fay, which he composed in the 1430s, composes the basis. Furthermore, it is a secular ballade called Se la Face ay Pale. Du Fay’s decided to base his Mass on a secular work out of respect for the Holy Shroud. Courageously Du Fay exercised the management of the cantus firmus in variation throughout the piece.
