Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Research Paper

Polycystic ovary syndrome is an endocrine system disorder that affects women. Women with this condition may have enlarged ovaries that have collections of fluid. These small collections of fluid are called follicles. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome may experience changes such as acne, excess hair growth, obesity and irregular menstrual periods. More serious side affects include heart disease and type 2 diabetes if not treated.

To be diagnosed with PCOS, a doctor will look for two of the following: irregular periods, excess androgen or polycystic ovaries. Irregular periods is the most common characteristic of PCOS. Irregular periods include menstrual intervals longer than 35 days, really heavy or very light periods, fewer than 8 menstrual cycles and a year and not having a menstrual cycle for more than 4 months at a time. Androgen is a male hormone, women with increased androgen levels may expertise more facial and body hair, the male pattern baldness and acne.
