Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is commonly referred to as PCOS. Polycystic Ovarian syndrome affects many women, yet professionals do not know the direct cause of this disease, but is often correlated with heredity and excess insulin. So how is one diagnosed or becomes aware of having PCOS? Often times, women will notice that they are having irregular or no menstrual cycles. A disruption in a woman’s body’s natural processes should be brought to a physicians attention. Polycystic means many cysts in this case on the ovary. One may feel slight, if any pain around the general area of the ovary. However, one does not have to have cysts on the ovaries to have PCOS. If treatment is not given one has the potential risk of developing endometrial cancer. Regular menstrual cycles shed the endometrium of the uterus, but if one has an irregular cycle one will have a build up of estrogen leaving this wall of the uterus at risk for cancer.
