It is controversial that the author of "Polygamy Now," Elizabeth Joseph, would say that there is only one lifestyle that would be fit for independent women, polygamy, having one or more husband/wife. The information she provides us in her reading can not necessarily be backed up. She is only stating how polygamy fits in with her own lifestyle. Not everyone has the same job, similar work schedules, and/or have children to take care of. It is selfish of the author to state how polygamy only fits into her lifestyle.…

Bisexuals face discrimination from both the heterosexual and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities. This discrimination may impact bisexuals' decisions regarding the sex of the person they choose to date. Despite being attracted to both sexes, 84% of bisexuals engage in opposite sex relationships (Pew Research Center, 2013). The mechanisms underlying these dating decisions are unclear. The present research focuses on exploring three possibilities as to why this disparity exists: (1) natural reproduction, (2) conformity to social norms, and (3) the available dating pool.…

For my first presentation, I chose to go over polygamy courtship and marriage by Kiersten Warde. Polygamy varies from your typical relationship in that it is a marriage involving one man and multiple women, like stated in the presentation, polygamy in Greek translates to “often married”. While this practice is illegal in the United States, it is still practiced in other places around the world today. Although, even in places where polygamy is accepted the man is truly only married to his first wife, the others are only bonded spiritually. Having many children is important to this practice, it is believed that the more children a man fathers the closer he is to God, which is achieved by having multiple children with multiple wives.…

The concept of serial monogamy was something I was familiar with, but a term I did not understand until completing the course. My father has been married a total of six times, and my mother has been married twice, but with five serious relationships that followed. We hear divorce rates are on the rise, and there is a commitment problem in America, and maybe so, but I believe it has to do with not being content with what you have. In class I learned serial monogamy has a lot to do with looking for an upgrade, or the next best thing. I also believe serial monogamy stems from being not being aware of The Big Transition from romantic love to intimacy.…

Perel gives many examples throughout chapter 10 on the different types of relationships that can qualify as polyamory. Culturally, we are taught from a young age that monogamy is the only way a marriage can work, and if we seek love outside the relationship than we are wrong. “Monogamy is the norm, and sexual fidelity is considered to mature, committed, and realistic.” (“Mating in Captivity,” 2006, p.192) What I loved about this chapter was the honesty surrounding this topic, and monogamy isn’t for…

Infidelity in relationships has always been a universal problem and many researches have tirelessly focused their findings on this topic. However, there is little research done on whether or not infidelity is a cause or an effect of poor relationship quality in both dating and marital relationships. Because attitudes towards cheating in dating relationships and extramarital sex (EMS) continue to be negative, further and more specific research regarding why these actions occur, when ( before or after the relationship’s quality becomes poor), and how to prevent infidelity in a relationship need to be addressed. According to the Associated Press’s Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, 57% of men admit to committing infidelity in any relationship…
