At this time in the play. Polonius, Gertrude, and Claudius are all talking about Ophelia and Hamlet. Polonius gives a speech and it reveals a lot about his character. He starts out with saying ¨I would fain prove so¨. He wants to prove to Claudius and everyone else that he is faithful and has honor as a trait to his character. Fain means happily, so Polonius is trying to say that he would be happy to be proved to be as good as Claudius and everyone else says he is. Through of what he is saying it is showing a lot about Polonius's character. He has a very controlling personality. In this instance he is trying to control Ophelia by her not being with Hamlet. He has told Claudius and Gertrude that she is not even allowed to accept gifts or letters

omic Relief: The Gravediggers in Act 5 offer a comic relief from the drama and death of the previous scenes. Their jokes heavily rely on death and the religion along with it. During 5.1, whilst digging Ophelia’s grave, they question with each other if she should be allowed to be buried within the Christian church graveyard since her death seems apparent that it was a suicide, and if this is the case that is prohibited within the Christian church. “Is she to be buried in Christian burial when she willfully seeks her own salvation?” (Hamlet …)…

Sasha Newman-Oktan Ms. Kuch ENG 4U 31 July, 2014 Minor Characters, Major Sufferings: A Comparison of Ophelia and Laertes in Hamlet Of the many themes present throughout the play of "Hamlet" (Shakespeare), such as revenge and madness, suffering is a key theme that not only prevails throughout the whole play, but is critical to the play's plot, in particular when applied to the characters. In the play, most all of the major characters including Gertrude, Claudius, Hamlet, the ghost of Hamlet's father, Laertes and lastly Ophelia, undergo some sort of personal suffering. The use of woe in these characters by Shakespeare produce the definition of tragedy as it is known today. In revenge tragedies, suffering for the hero and innocent characters is inevitable.…

He says, “Thou wretched, rash, intruding fool, farewell”(3.4.38) He does not have any regrets about his actions and treats Polonius’s body with great disrespect. This is the beginning of the tragedy because it is the first life Hamlet takes and it isn’t even Claudius. It is an innocent old man and tragically Hamlet’s words have turned into action, but this revenge is only going to bring Hamlet closer to insanity and only bring more death to him. When Polonius dies I think the audience is suppose to feel devastated and surprised.…

Because Ophelia has adopted Hamlet’s madness, Hamlet, whose love for Ophelia has withered away, is considered “dead and gone” to Ophelia. Closer to the end of the play, Ophelia’s madness resembles Hamlet’s more and more. Laertes says that in Ophelia’s language “[t]his nothing’s more than matter.” Polonius had a similar response to Hamlet’s language stating, “How pregnant sometimes his replies are!” Indicating that both of their mad languages are somewhat incomprehensible to all other characters with in the play.…

Love is an ambiguous feeling; it is often questionable to even those experiencing it whether it does or does not exist, and yet more difficult to analyze from a third perspective. The very definition of love is subjective but at its core it is a strong attraction towards someone that you care for deeply. Shakespeare explored some themes of love in the play Hamlet, such as the relationship between Hamlet and Ophelia. Hamlet originally did have a genuine love for Ophelia but it was lost in the midst of selfishness and revenge.…

Claudius has one set of lines that begins, “Let’s follow Gertrude. How much I had to do to calm his rage!”. Interestingly, Claudius receives the ability to use exclamation, even though he is not even directly responding to the death of Ophelia, but instead of the emotional response of Laertes. Not only does this give more emotional agency to men, it also dismisses the death of Ophelia as being less important than the possible response of Laertes. Claudius is more interested in following Laertes than grieving for Ophelia or even asking Gertrude if she is emotionally okay after receiving the news.…

Because Polonius wants his children to behave respectably at all times on his behalf, he minimizes for Laertes and Ophelia’s freedom. The impact of this parental approach, is that even Polonius’ blessings are in fact further commands in disguise that his children must follow. This principle is highlighted when Laertes is first preparing to leave Denmark and journey to France as Polonius tells his son to “take my blessing with thee” (1.3.57) and then continues to warn Laertes to act in a very particular and secretive way including to “give every man thy ear, but few thy voice; / Take each man’s censure, but reserve thy judgement” (1.3.68-9) in order to always be aware of the affairs of others, but never involved, therefore extending Polonius’ intrusive ear and simultaneously protecting their family’s reputation abroad. Moreover however, Polonius even tells Ophelia to “think yourself a baby,” (1.3.105) in order to condition her to rely on him and follow a predetermined path that he has chosen rather than develop any capacity to rationally deal with problems on her…

In many aspects of life, including literary works, women are often overlooked and not given the same importance as men. In William Shakespeare’s tragic play “Hamlet”, the female characters, Queen Gertrude and Ophelia, are given very few lines and are either portrayed negatively, or just seen as sex objects that men can do whatever they want with. The lack of significance they are given allows for them to be merely background characters, instead of playing major roles. Throughout the play, Queen Gertrude, Hamlet’s mother is portrayed negatively.…

Polonius put his job on the line to prove his certainty, which was a move filled with haste and a limited amount of proof. He then wants to stoop to trickery to prove to the King and Queen that Hamlet’s love for Ophelia has made him mad. If Gertrude was more sympathetic towards Hamlet, she would be a more admired character; however, she fails to comfort Hamlet throughout the play and understand his point of view. Gertrude is quite selfish because she never thinks that her actions could be the main cause of Hamlet’s depression.…
