Polonius’ advice in modern English would be similar to the following: “ Keep your thoughts quiet, don’t jump to conclusions. Be kind but not fake. You don’t need multiple friends, just a few trust worthy ones will be enough. Picking fights won’t get you anywhere, however avoid being pushed around. Listen to others, but keep from talking too much. Don’t let others know what you are against or for, but hear others standings on different topics. Remember a higher quality object with be more useful than a flashy one. Be the only one accountable for your finances, well not being accountable for anyone else’s. Never forget to be yourself.”

Polonius’ advice gives deep insight into his character. Polonius is guarded towards everyone it seems

The mournful pun Romeo uses at the party conveys the message of how caught up he is with Rosaline as it is like a black cloud over his head not allowing him to do anything else. Romeo remourses to Mercutio: “You have dancing shoes / With nimble soles. I have a soul of lead / so stakes me to the ground I cannot move,” (1.4 ll 14-16). This FIDDS shapes the morale of the inner conflict Romeo has within himself. It illustrates how even though he wants to move on to better things, he is still held up with the thoughts of Rosaline, unable to think about anything else.…

Shakespeare shows how Romeo is an impetuous character through the many hasty decisions he makes. For example; when he is pouting over not being able to have a certain girl, his love is “soon forsaken” when he quickly finds another one (II.iii.67). This impatient behavior is seen frequently throughout the play. Upon seeing Juliet at the dance he is entranced by her “beauty too rich for use” so he pursues her right away. He even goes as far to say “I ne’er saw true beauty till this night” (I.v.45-51).…

So Hamlet's pretty vicious to the women in this play. He orders Ophelia for instance to "get thee to a nunnery" and he tells his mother Gertrude, "frailty, thy name is woman" even though Hamlet isn't terribly robust, as you may have noticed. Now there's been some backlash to us discussing gender dynamics in literature, but this is a really important contemporary approach to the study of literature. It's not the only one, it's not the only one that we do here, but it is one that matters.…
