Hawaii is a beautiful place with many stunning sights to visit. The island is one of the best places to visit, but to keep its beauty alive we need to malama da aina or take care of the land. If we don’t do this, Hawaii will lose its beauty with all kinds of rubbish on our beaches, parks, and other places to stay. All of the trash generated have an impact on animals and people. For example, plastic is part of the trash being developed which can cause pollution. Also, when sea turtles get stuck in plastic, it suffocates them making the sea creature vulnerable and won’t be able to do things to their full potential. This problem leads and can impact people because when fish eat the plastic, some of the plastic has toxins so when people eat fish, these toxins go in humans causing health problems. Therefore, rubbish in the islands can lead to major problems. Polynesians came a long way to find the island of Hawaii. According to the article titled “Polynesian Navigation” by Wikipedia, Polynesian navigation was used for thousands of years to voyage across the immense ocean. The navigators traveled to small inhabited islands using their senses and knowledge passed by oral tradition from master to apprentice. The Polynesian navigators relied on skill and tools around them to travel the sea and used no instruments. Their ancestors passed down the ways of navigation by observing the stars in the sky and reading the swells in the ocean. The techniques they used and their extraordinary canoe making have been kept as a guild secret. Each island mainly had a guild of navigators which in times of famine or difficulty could trade for aid and evacuate people to neighboring islands.
