1. Political socialization is influenced by family, region, and religion. Political socialization is most influenced by the family and parents of the individual as these beliefs are intentionally or unintentionally preached to the child from a young age.

2. Starting with the Vietnam War and Watergate, the confidence in the government has drastically declined. Watergate shocked the American public, as they discovered corruption at the highest office in the country. It was the beginning of the now common belief that most, if not all, politicians are corrupt and only promote their own interests. It led many Americans to distrust politicians. a. Liberals support the right to obtain an abortion, or the right to choose and the right to privacy, while conservatives oppose abortion. Since conservatives are more religious, they are more opposed to abortion, while liberals believe that it is an infringement of civil liberties to regulate abortions, as it should be the choice of the woman.
b. Liberals support increasing the taxes on the rich, while conservatives want to cut taxes. Conservatives oppose a large federal government, and are opposed to funding it through taxes, and do not believe that taxing the rich more is fair.
c. Liberals want to spend less on defense, while conservatives want to spend more, as they believe that a strong military is reflective of a strong nation. They believe that Americans are the protectors of the world.
d. Liberals are in favor of affirmative action to help previously disadvantaged groups, while conservatives are opposed to it because they believe it is a form of reverse

The American Voter study examined how people decide who they will vote for, and they concluded that most people base their votes off of group benefits, or which political party they prefer. Ideally, people would vote according to the issues pertinent to their own lives, but very few people actually do this. Some even vote without knowledge of their ideology and simply vote according to the hype. Some vote depending on the state of the country and the economy, but do not vote solely for one party. It shows that not enough of the electorate bases their voting decisions off of issues pertinent to their own lives, but rather, vote according to their political party even if they disagree with some plans of the
