To divide a nation is to give a reason for internal discord, and internal discord most often leads to internal conflict. Such as the division of the nation in the Civil War. While in the end the division led to the betterment of the nation had people looked past the many superficial issues causing the division they may been able to avoid the conflict altogether. Had they looked past the issues of origin of a person or of a person's skin color or many other issues of the day, they would have likely never suffered from these particular issues to begin with.
