I consider my political ideology to be more closely aligned with conservatism. While growing up, I realized that my family’s Cuban background had a big influence on them being conservative because Cuban culture has always emphasized the importance of living life (or believing in) with traditional values and morals. My family’s political ideology has always related more to conservatism. “Conservatives believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American values and a strong national defense. [They] believe the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals. The United States began the war on drugs in 1971 and we spend an estimated twenty billion to twenty-five billion yearly to enforce anti-drug policies (Graves, 2012). The drug war has been a total failure for the United States because drug use continues to rise amongst individuals. I believe the government must rethink and restructure the criminal justice system. We need to create a new punishment system that is based on rehabilitation for individuals who are charged with drug related offenses because the current methods used by the justice system have proved to not be effective and has caused many innocent people to lose their opportunity at getting a job. Also, I believe that marijuana should be decriminalized and rescheduled because of the health benefits that it has and it is no more dangerous than …show more content…
ISIS and other terror groups pose a dangerous threat to the safety of many innocent families around the United States. My family and friends all believe that national security has to be a top priority of the government. Also, they believe that improving the economy is a very important political issue that must be handled as soon as possible. Furthermore, my family believes another important political issue is to save the Cuban people from the Castro regime. The Castro regime has denied the Cuban people of their fundamental human rights. My family and I hope for positive change in Cuba due to our Cuban background and our many family members who are oppressed by the government every day.
The political issue that I do not consider important is the gun control issue. I believe that it is every person right to own a firearm and it would be unconstitutional for the government to strip Americans from their second amendment rights. Additionally, good citizens who are licensed to carry a firearm are the ones that stop the bad guys during a dangerous situation. Government must not change gun control laws because if they do so it would make many Americans more susceptible to deadly threats from bad individuals with firearms. Overall, this is my political
