Socializing was very different in the North in comparison to the South. The reform movements were huge in the social community. One of these reform movements was the women's rights movement. Women wanted to have better work and more rights. They finally realized that they shouldn’t have to just do house work. The Free Soil party was formed by Martin Van Buren to “oppose the expansion of slavery into the western territories” (learnnc.com). They didn’t entirely want to end slavery, just keep it controlled. Another party formed was the Republican party. Led by John C. Fremont and Abraham Lincoln, the party was formed simply to keep the Union as it was. Lincoln was willing to do anything from avoiding succession such as “ ...promising not to abolish slavery where it already existed” (Deverell and White Pg. 457).
