Political Differences Between North And South

Differences Between North and South The United States was divided by regions due to many differences. Both regions had different ways of socializing within their communities. The economies of the regions were extremely different from each other. Each region also had very different political views on how the country should function. These differences caused conflict that would lead to the Civil War.
Socializing was very different in the North in comparison to the South. The reform movements were huge in the social community. One of these reform movements was the women's rights movement. Women wanted to have better work and more rights. They finally realized that they shouldn’t have to just do house work. Once women began to fight for African American’s rights, “...it led many female abolitionists to fight for women’s rights” (Deverell and White Pg. 423). The Free Soil party was formed by Martin Van Buren to “oppose the expansion of slavery into the western territories” (learnnc.com). They didn’t entirely want to end slavery, just keep it controlled. Another party formed was the Republican party. Led by John C. Fremont and Abraham Lincoln, the party was formed simply to keep the Union as it was. Lincoln was willing to do anything from avoiding succession such as “ ...promising not to abolish slavery where it already existed” (Deverell and White Pg. 457). The large Democratic party had divided due to conflict into Northern and Southern Democrats. The Southern Democrats were led by John C. Breckenridge. “They could not agree with the Northern Democrats over slavery, so they each had a candidate for the election and both lost to the Republicans” (Abraham Lincoln).
