Park Jung-hee, who was in the Blue House for 17 years, was assassinated in October 1980. The whole country was in chaos, but people were dreaming about finally becoming a democratic country after being under the longest dictator in the history of Korea. However, new military authorities, led by Jeon Du-hwan, took over the government with 12.12 coup d’etat. People were devastated that the government fell under the military leader again, and people in Gwangju, mainly led by college students, gathered together to fight against the new authoritarian government. The leaders of the government knew their seizure of power was not a righteous thing, so they claimed the martial law, and slaughtered the protesters to shush them and falsely accused them as north Korean spies. People got angry at the government and the protest evolved into an armed struggle against the military. The protest itself was not successful because it failed to develop into a national outrage as the government strictly controlled the media and denounced the protesters as spies who tried to intensify the confusion of the state of the nation. However, the protest that is going on right now is probably the most non-violent protest in the world. Even though there were more than 2 million people in one setting, no one was arrested, and people corrected themselves whenever some people tried to act violently. People obeyed the law enforcement, and there were some events in which the public gave the police flowers in order to thank for their hard work in trying to maintain the public order.
