Political Correctness In Today's Society

Political Correctness is an important aspect of today’s society. The case I was presented with questioned political correctness in the comedic sphere. Political correctness is defined by Webster dictionary as, conforming to a belief that language and practices which could offend political sensibilities (as in matters of sex or race) should be eliminated. Comedians do not care what comes out of their mouths as long as they get the publicity and are able further their career in any way possible. Jeremy Bentham’s philosophical, moral reasoning helps illustrate the need for political correctness in today’s society.
In the article, comedians give their perspectives on political correctness and if it has a place in the comedic sphere. Certain comedians believe that political correctness has a negative impact on comedy and that people are being too sensitive. For example, Jerry Seinfeld describes it as a “creepy PC thing” and that it “really bothers” him. On the other hand, comedians such as Sarah Silverman believes that although, people will be offended no matter what they say, it is important to change with the times, and clean up their vocabulary.

Sophists, such as Plato and Aristotle, were criticized for teaching wealthy children to become good public speakers so they could win votes in office, and dodge a prison sentence. Public officials use language that does not alienate or offend in order to win the most votes. This is why so many people are against political correctness because it divided the wealthy and the poor.
