Political Correctness In Popular Culture

Marcus Gravey, an early 20th century American Political leader, once stated “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots. “ For any group of people to be successful, it is imperative that they understand where they once came from. Many precentors in our class captured the essence and importance created by the specific culture they studied. There are numerous amounts of cultures that all interact and intermingle in many different ways that make up the country we live in today. Webster dictionary defined political correctness as “agreeing with the idea that people should be careful to not use language or behave in a way that could offend a particular group of people.” This redirect in contemporary America is currently being expressed through comedy. Many comedians, such as Daniel Tosh, push the limit by making offensive jokes their sort of calling card. They are doing this to combat political correctness. Political commentator, Glen Beck, once stated that “Political correctness does not change us, it shuts us up.” I personally believe that political correctness is a way of certain governmental group’s means to silence and suppress opposition to what they want to be done in America. This is yet another example of how cultures in America can influence a culture. In our country every citizen, man, women or child, is endowed certain inalienable rights.
