¨Political Correctness doesn't change us, it shuts us up.¨ ( Glenn Beck- television personality and radio host) Political correctness has affected our safety, education, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion. The original purpose for political correctness was to make people more aware and sensitive of other cultures. It was also created to defend the minorities, and those groups that were being treated unfairly. Although it’s original goals were sound, Political correctness has impacted our daily lives, by trying to silence us.
Political correctness was born to increase cultural sensitivity, awareness, and compassion for others. Many people were unaware of other people´s beliefs and cultural differences. If they saw someone that was different, then them they would judge them. In many schools today political correctness is very much involved on campuses . Many colleges, such as Santa Clara University and Harvard, have set in place ¨conduct codes¨ for specific politically sensitive behavior. A conduct code for “hate speech” consists of discriminatory harassment (oral, written, physical, or graphic). This is an important guideline to have at schools, however many schools are taking this to an extreme. If a student calls someone a thug, or points out someone’s ethnicity then they are called a racist and kicked out of the school, and their reputation is potentially destroyed. Also, many colleges do not allow conservative speakers to talk to students on campus, because they do not agree with their beliefs about
