Political Cartoon Analysis

This political cartoon was drawn by Drew Sheneman in 2018 after the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida. The illustration shows President Trump offering a school teacher a gun. In contrast, the teacher is telling President Trump what she would prefer instead of a gun. Recently, there has been a debate regarding giving teachers the ability to keep guns and weapons on school grounds in the case of an emergency. Most teachers have refused to carry weapons, however there may be a stronger motive than just not wanting a weapon. In the political cartoon, the teacher says she would rather have textbooks, computers, pencils, arts funding, universal pre-k, or chalk making it sound like an acceptation for teachers to receive chalk. This political cartoon satirizes allowing convicts the right to vote. There is bias in this cartoon by being against the criminal activity and by showing the positives of the Obama campaign. This will be helpful because it shows the results if felons are given the right to vote. Therefore, this political cartoon can be used as an opposing argument because the artists views are against felon…

The author of this political cartoon is David Horsey. He usually does political cartoons and for this specific one, he purposely chooses his audience that belong to everyday average parents, teachers, and gun loving patriots all the while persuading them of his opinion by using rhetorical words and images. The comic itself displays how he feels on gun control, and how little security the public is allowed to have for themselves whether it be concealed or otherwise. How the comic is formatted to look and the culture also greatly affect his work. The cartoon’s main figure ( Sarah Palin) also believes that gun control could easily leave millions of people defenceless in the U.S., which given with the several who seek to brutalize Americans such as Terrorists, crazed gun-men, and even random psychos .…

As Brooks struck again and again, Sumner rose and lurched blindly about the chamber, futilely attempting to protect himself. A striking example of this is cartoon from 1868, entitled “This is a white man's government"5 "We regard the Reconstruction Acts (so called) of Congress as usurpations, and unconstitutional, revolutionary, and void" - Democratic Platform” by Thomas Nast. It portrays an African American soldier being stepped on by three men who make up the majority of American society. There is the southerner with a belt buckle with a confederate emblem, a rich northerner with a 5th avenue pin, and an immigrant depicted as a stereotypical Irishman. Each of them wields their votes over the soldier while a black orphanage burns in the background.…

The television show for my discussion is called Braindead. This is a television show filled with political satire that I find amusing. The setting of the show is Capitol Hill where alien type of ants invade the brains of both Democrats and Republican politicians in Congress. Once the ants are done feasting on your brain the politicians become Braindead and act absolutely ridiculous and behave absurd.…

Peter Bagge’s Hate comics were published as the underground comics movement was ending and a new alternative comics movement was taking shape. While the issues of Hate give all the appearances of being geared towards a male audience, the exclusive alternative nature of the comics allowed for a significant male and female audience that allowed readers to identify themselves within the characters’ self-critical reflection and distain for mainstream media and peoples characterized their internal monologues. By creating a persona in the stories’ text and within the editor and letter spaces that embraced some of the misogyny and patriotism that Buddy satires while embracing, Bagge was able to maintain the ironic filter of alternative comics that…

From the time we are little, we are told not to judge a book by its cover. But sometimes we do anyways. We miss out on the opportunity to read a great book, simply because we set it down after glancing at the cover. The cover contains one image but the book itself has thousands of words. Yet, we still fall under the trap of judging a book by the one photo on the cover and not the words that make up the book.…

America is on the cusp of a modern revolution, a revolution that has been bubbling under the surface for decades, but has recently come to light due to the election. Before the election was over, it was obvious that no matter who won, history was going to be made. If Bernie won, he would have been our first Jewish president. If Hillary won, she would have been our first woman president. When Trump won, election history was made, and he is still making it.…

The spoken and written word, dating back to the first civilizations and the Agricultural Revolution, has been used to express our thoughts and feelings, to help communicate with the people around us, to empower, and to inspire. However, language can also be used negatively: to denigrate, insult, obfuscate, euphemize, or deceive. It is especially used negatively in politics, where politicians use rhetoric and language in order to lobby their own agenda, further propaganda, and divide the population without directly saying so. In an amusing political cartoon by David Horsey, a group of children perform for their parents in a play about Thanksgiving. In this cartoon, a young white “pilgrim’’ proclaims to a group of young “Native Americans”, to the surprise of the parents, that he is a “racist European Conqueror who has come to commit Genocide against them”.…
