Politeness Theory: Face Threatening Acts

The second main theory is the Politeness Theory. In this movie, politeness theory and its concepts have appeared a lot. There are two concepts showed by the film. The first one is about that Claude and Marie usually would like to maintain their positive faces in public places. And another part is about how did Claude or Marie made face threatening acts, and what is the difference between their face threatening acts.
Politeness Theory means when people interacted with others, they tried to manage and restore their own face through communications (Oliver, 2017). Face this term in Politeness Theory, not only represents our facial features, it symbolizes the self-image which we prefer others to perceive. Also, face defined as two aspects, the

And their ways to do the face threatening acts also are distinct. The type of face threating acts which Marie used the most is “Bald on Record”. For instance, she wanted to solve the conflicts between their sons-in-law and themselves, however, she could not do it by herself, then she sought helps from Claude, she suggested Claude to do the toast, and apologized to their sons-in-law. What’s more, Marie liked to go to Church and complained to Father, she also asked Father’s opinions about how to have a Catholic son-in-law. On the other hand, Claude did not do much face threating acts like Marie, when he knew that his last daughter will marry to a black male, he was frustrated. But he didn’t do any Face threating acts. The only way he resolves his stress is doing some outdoor activities, like farming, and fishing. Just like Buikema and Roeters (1982) found in their analyses, females are more likely to do more face threatening acts than males. Claude and Marie’s behaviors reflect this idea. Moreover, the few scenes Claude made face threatening acts include a plot which Claude was fishing, and he asked Charles (the fourth son-in-law)’s father to help him pull the fishing rod. This is the only typical face threatening act Claude made during the whole movie. Claude’s behavior reminds me other scholars’ researches about face threatening acts. Guan and Lee indicated in their studies that: “This research

In this case, both sources I read mention the importance of good manner. The first source “The Power of Hello” written by Howard White, the former basketball star and current vice president of Jordan Brand at Nike. The second source is the “Student Code” of the University of Illinois. It most likely written by the administrators of the university.…

“A classic is a book that has never finished saying what is has to say” once said by Italo Calvino, expresses that although numerous years could pass after a novel was written, a true classic shall never stop connecting to its readers. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens is one of those classics. The historical drama is set in 1775, at the start of the American Revolution, where Lucie Manette is reunited with her father, Dr. Manette of Beauvais, after learning that he spent 18 years in a French prison instead of being dead like she assumed he was. As the years passed, the Manette family grows to include Charles Darnay, Sydney Carton, and the ramifications of the French Revolution. Despite being first published in 1859, A Tale of Two Cities…

Scott Rouse’s seminar entitled Body Language Tactics was very informative as it relates to body language and what it means in a business aspect. It seemed the most informative portion of the seminar as it relates to my organization is the reasons why individuals lie. According to Mr. Rouse, we lie for love, hate or greed (personal communication, October 17th, 2015). The first theory is the social learning theory (SLT). It begins on the premise that we learn aggressive behaviour by observing others. Although we learn this behaviour we may not chose to show it, we are more likely to imitate the behaviour if they are a role model. Also, if the observed aggression is shown to have positive consequences, then we are more likely to observe it, this is commonly referred to as vicarious reinforcement. In order for social learning to take place the individual must form a mental representation of the behaviour and the expectancy of future outcomes of the behaviour.…

According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, sexual harassment “…is unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature.” Sexual harassment has been going on for ages, but victims didn’t often report it. After reading the case study about a young boy named Marvin who consistently displays defiant and aggressive behaviors towards peers and adults, I have observed that the only thing predictable about his behaviors is that there occur on a daily basis. After reading the running records that were completed through observations that occurred three times daily for two days, I have come to the conclusion that his negative behaviors occurred during almost all times of the day, therefore making it hard to predict these aggressive behaviors. The only time during the two days of observations in which Marvin did not display any misbehaviors was during lunch. Other than that, it seems as though Marvin was disruptive, defiant or aggressive throughout…
