The disease I have chosen to research is the polio virus. The full name is poliomyelitis. The name comes from a Greek origin meaning, gray and marrow which refer to the spinal cord, and –itis which means inflammation. This disease was a major fear in the early 20th century. There are two major different types of the disease which I will discuss further in this paper. One of the two I will discuss is broken down into three different categories. I will go further into depth with all of the types. I will also discuss President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his history with the virus and how it had a play on his presidency. With this type of the virus symptoms do not include paralysis. There are many sever types of symptoms including but not limited to, things such as fever, vomiting, headache, sore throat, and meningitis. These symptoms usually can last up to 10 days. These types of symptoms are clearly flu like, but can also be much more severe. The second and much worse type of polio is called, as you would assume, paralytic polio. The symptoms for this type of the polio virus are much worse than that of the non-paralytic polio. The thing about paralytic polio is there are three different classifications of this type, depending on what area of the body is affected. One is spinal polio, which as you imagine would be that of the spinal cord. The second type of paralytic polio is bulbar polio, which affects the brainstem. The third and final is known as bulbospinal, this means the infection is causing strain on both the brainstem and the spinal cord. The symptoms of paralytic polio first begin to appear flu like, resembling that of the non-paralytic polio. The only difference is within a week the symptoms worsen into things like, loss of reflexes, muscle aches, and other things.
