Policing in Kelsey: Budget Report With the City of Kelsey having an increase of criminal activity it is the responsibility of the city to ensure that its citizens are safe. It should be the top priority of every person on this board to ensure there is additional funding found so that additional police officers can be hired and trained. Police officers from lower crime areas can be moved to the higher crime areas but the police department must ensure there is not an increase of crime in those areas with fewer police officers.

The number of officers killed in the line of duty has reduced by over three times that of the early 1970s. Presently, the number of fallen has reduced further from 70 in 2001 to 41 in 2008. The 72 deaths that resulted from the events of September 11, 2001 are not included in the totals. So far this year, there have been 20 gun related deaths for the police nationwide” (Project America, 2013). With the City of Kelsey’s population growing so must the number of police officers on the street.
Police officers from low crime areas need to be moved to better represent police presence in the higher crime areas. There still needs to be an officer presence in other areas but lighter patrols so that other officers can be moved to high crime areas. Target enforcement should be put into place on higher crime areas and officers should implement community policing so that these police officers have direct contact with the community to help lower the criminal activity.
Police officers must write citations for speeding and other small offences so that the community views the increase police presence and the fines from those citations will help fund additional officers. The more funding that comes in from citations the more police officers can be hired and better equipment for those police officers can be purchased.
