Usually k9s are sometimes adopted from shelters or they are donated by the public or they are bought with money given in donations to the police, these donations are also used to cover the expenses of the dog such as dog food, training equipment, and veterinary bills because almost all of the budget of the police goes towards the salary and training of the officers (National Police Dog Foundation).
