Police Use Of Unnecessary Force

Decent Essays
I think the use of unnecessary force has been constant. I believe the only time a officer should use deadly force is when they think there life is in danger. When someone is a reasonable distance from a officer and they have a weapon I don’t think they should be shooting to kill. They should be shooting to unarm the individual. There are so many videos of police officers using excessive force. I think that these videos are now a accurate depiction of police these viral videos are showing what police officers have been doing more people are now seeing how bad this issue is. The media is biased when it comes to police situations they only show small clips of videos and most of the time it shines a bad light onto police. When watching a video,

An article written by Kirsten West Savali she discovers the relationship with the African American population and police brutality. According to the article, Kristen states, “ Thirty cases of state sanctioned or justified murder of Black people in the first 3 months of 2012 alone have been found.” (Savali 4) Black Americans are overwhelming faced with corruption, violence, and profiling more than any other racial or ethnic group: There is a huge racial dimension to this problem. This is because many police officials look at the African American race as violence and terror. According to a survey taken by the ACLU, it shows that the Latinos and African-American group in particular show that confidence in law enforcement is relatively low, and…

of the young hippie movement, a growing number of young people who rejected authority and embraced the drug culture (History.com, 2010). In response to police using physical force in a civil protest, the courts Fourth Amendment doctrine regulating police violence, including its recent decision in Scott v. Harris, is unprincipled and indeterminate. The common law of justification defenses, by contrast, gives a well-established legal structure for figuring out when a person may justly use force against another. I believe that police use of force can be constitutionally justified only if they are in pursuit of legitimate states interests. In particular, police use of force is justified only if they assist the mechanisms of criminal justice (e.g.,…

Queensland police have a dangerous job, and therefore, they do not use excessive force, nor do they draw Tasers more often than need. Queensland police have the right to do their job, of protecting and serving the community, even if that means using force or Tasering on an offender.…

Police officers who are hired to serve the community, and make it safe, are doing the opposite. Instead of civilians feeling safe, they feel as if they must protect themselves from officers. Many within the society fear for their lives on a day to day basis from officers, whether they are walking, or driving when pulled over. We must watch what we say, or do. They use extreme measures when it is not necessary when handling a situation.…

Use of Deadly Force Police officers, or any type of law enforcement are here to protect us from any harm. Discretion is something that law enforcement uses and plays a major role in policing. Many people have their own opinion on whether police officers are doing their job the right way. Of course we all have our own views and what the “right way” is and how it differs from people to people. What I believe is that many police officers are not doing their job right due to the fact that there have been many cases in which it is demonstrated that police officers have taken advantage of their position and have used discretion in an inappropriate manner.…

After reading Reuss-Ianni’s chapter 3, I decided to investigate the effects of neighborhood context and police aggressiveness. To support this argument, I plan to use textbook along with a peer-reviewed article. I am also interested in learning more about the code of silence covered briefly in Burns (2013), chapter 3 and to accomplish this, I will be doing an internet-based research on how the code of silence diminishes police integrity. When I first saw the video, I got a little mad at the police officer for not handling the situation better with a minor and the use of excessive force. After I finished watching it, I read the article on Yahoo that followed it explaining how the video was incomplete and put the officer to be a bad guy when the student was resisting and being violent. Situations like these that show up on the news make me want to think poorly of the police because of how violent they become and abuse the title they have. I often have to stop myself to remember that not all police officers are that way because of other stories seen out there about how an officer helped save a life or stopped a crime from happening.…

The job of a police officer is to protect and serve the people and to preserve the peace within the country. However, there have been certain incidences where people felt as if the law enforcement officers have taken advantage of their power. Due to the fact that many people are beginning to generate these specific feelings towards the police, creates tension between the people and the law enforcement officers, especially individuals of color. Others agree that individuals of color intimidate law enforcement officers, causing them to act with necessary force.…

While it is great to get evidence from more points of views filming cops that are standing by doing nothing wrong seems like a waste of time and should be focusing on other things that are going on around. Around 3 minutes into the video I liked what that officer had to say about his father being a cop for eighteen years then being shot, because cops put their life on the line to protect others and if a cop is in a situation with someone who is armed who may or may not use that weapon is a difficult choice to make if the person with a weapon is not cooperating and end up having…

Use of Force Paper What is use of force in police work; well for one thing it is unescapable and goes hand in hand with doing your job as a police officer. There are so many different scenarios that can come into play when an officer decides to use force. I do think that police officers overuse their force at times. Sometimes too much power can go to a person’s head. Since the increased presence of social media, plenty of videos of police have been floating around the web. Most of the videos consist of police brutality or police stepping out of line, and rarely do you see police performing an act of real justice. This does not mean police around the world intend to harm citizens, it simply means that the officers that do take it too far will always be recorded. And the officer that does his job properly will go unnoticed. This is why social media has created a false image for police, because it portrays all officers as corrupt due to a few rotten apples.…
