in 2015, The Washington Post created a database to find fatal police shootings. The project showed that 732 white people were killed by police in a single year while only 352 blacks were killed in a year. So how does police brutality happen more often to black people? A passage from the Washington Post says this. “According to the most recent census data, there are nearly 160 million more white people in America than there are black people. White people make up roughly 62 percent of the U.S. population but only about 49 percent of those who are killed by police officers. African Americans, however, account for 24 percent of those fatally shot and killed by the police despite being just 13 percent of the U.S. population. As The Post noted in a new analysis published last week, that means black Americans are 2.5 times as likely as white Americans to be shot and killed by police officers.” Basically this passage is saying that the only reason more white people are subjected to police brutality is because they make up a majority of the population. Police killings and brutality still happens to African Americans at a much higher rate. Currently there are many movements, protests, and even laws trying to be passed that will aid in preventing police brutality. Probably the most prominent of them all is BLM. The whole purpose of BLM is to raise awareness about police brutality towards African Americans. BLM reaches out through peaceful protests, social media, and through some churches. However, there are some extremists in the movement who believe that white police officers should be killed. This was made apparent by the Dallas shooting by a man by the name of Micah. Micah claimed that he was no part of any group and that he simply wanted to kill white cops. In a peaceful protest in Dallas, the man started shooting at white police officers who were standing around. He wounded a few and killed five. While BLM is supposed to be a peaceful movement, outsiders looking in assume that the infamous “Micah X” was a part of the BLM movement. In order to prevent police brutality, protests are necessary to spread awareness and get a law passed that will do something about the percentages of black
