Police Officer Response

Decent Essays
I am very disheartened whenever any civil servant is killed, especially a police officer. These acts continue to show how society has lost respect for those we have entrusted to serve and protect. The media has not encouraged police and citizens relationships by reporting only bad incidents involving police and not the great things they do everyday. The media has perpertrated a mass hysteria of citizens against police officers, and officers retaliation. The police officer response I chose involves a police officer response that resulted in a police officer being killed.

No cop, anywhere, signed up to be murdered,” said James P. O’Neill (commissioner of the New York Police Department). Two police officers in a city near Columbus, Ohio, were shot and killed Saturday while responding to a 911 hangup call involving potential domestic abuse. The officers, Eric Joering, 39, and Anthony Morelli, 54, had responded at 12:10 p.m., eight minutes after the call, about a potential domestic situation. They were immediately met with gunfire, as they went into the apartment. Officer Joering died at scene.…

Each year in the United States on duty police officers shoot between 950 - 1000 innocent people a year. According to an analysis by criminologist Philip Stinson, only 48 officers have been charged with manslaughter since 2005. These officers should not be treated above the law and should be held accountable for their actions. Officers try to justify their actions by claiming they were ‘defending themselves’ or ‘fearing their lives’ but what possible defending would you need against a 12 year old boy with a toy gun [Tamir Rice] or an unarmed 17 year old boy buying Skittles at a convenience store [Trayvon Martin].Imagine knowing your child will never return from the store because they were wrongfully murdered and their murderer gets to not…

How can we expect to be heard if we are trying to resolve violence with violence. Over the past few years there has been an ongoing war between the blacks and white police officers. Therefore I am not surprised about what happen to the five police officers in Dallas. Police officers are given the power to take people’s live, but only when it’s necessary. The problem with this is that many police officers kill people for a small cause that shouldn’t result in death. The police department needs to change their tactics. Citizens should no longer go after the officers, but instead go after the higher up in these departments. My overall reaction of how our departments are treating our officers and citizens is in disgust. Maybe our superiors within the NYPD need to be investigated in more depth, instead of our officers whom 95% of the time do not have a say so, they just do what they are told to get paid just like every one else who works. For our officers who, afraid to speak up because of the consequences of being a whistle blower, please stand up for what is right lets out the superiors for all the wrongs being done inside…

Police officers who are hired to serve the community, and make it safe, are doing the opposite. Instead of civilians feeling safe, they feel as if they must protect themselves from officers. Many within the society fear for their lives on a day to day basis from officers, whether they are walking, or driving when pulled over. We must watch what we say, or do. They use extreme measures when it is not necessary when handling a situation.…

The James Brissette case involved the shooting of multiple black men at Danziger Bridge, but the death of James. The officers Robert, Kenneth, and Anthony shot at the men and called for backup saying the men were shooting at them, which led to the death of James and injuries of the others. After gaining knowledge about the James Brissette story, I think that police corruption is starting to become an effect on the society today because of the many different cases of police corruption. I feel that the incident was very brutal and unfair, but it is fair that each of the officers served their time for what they had done. Police officers do have a dangerous jobs and they do not always keep our citizens safe, because they are often shooting the citizens without probable cause.…

Sometimes the tile of “police officer” is a contribution to victimization all by itself. Many of the victims’ families have experienced such misery and sadness due to the deaths of their relatives. These unfair scenarios are truly harming our society and our country in general because of police officers who can’t control their hatred for other races, even though they are just like them, but have different appearances. There is no reason why people have to suffer from this behavior and their families as well. As police officers, they should be capable of being fair with everyone or everything, and they should discover intelligent ways of solving a dilemma, in a precise way.…
