Since I am the new chief of police in a new department, I would like for each of my employees to stop by my office within the first week to introduce themselves so that we may become acquainted. I consider the relationship and interaction between leaders and subordinates to be vital to our success. Based on the behavioral studies and the managerial grid, I am equally concerned with my staffs needs along with production. Even though I strongly believe in leader-member relations, we must all be held accountable within our department in order to effectively protect and serve the community. While in the office we should look to handle communication and mannerisms in a professional fashion. When developing informal communication skills, “communication networks are important for efficient and effective operations in criminal justice agencies.” (Stojkovic, 2015, pg. 112) Proper communication skills should be practiced both internally and externally between departments. We have recently seen the major role that sharing information can play with the attacks of 9/11. Had we had better communication and protocol, that catastrophic event could have been negated and avoided.
