As the newly hired Chief of Police in Ann Arbor, Michigan, I have taken notice to a few concerns and issues arising within my inherited police division. In an effort to repair the previous chief’s lack of leadership and management, I will devise a realistic plan of action effective immediately to combat the internal organization and disarray. More specifically, I will look to improve leadership, morale, working conditions, and organizational communication within our department.
With an unusually high crime and murder rate this past year it is time to take action and make some changes. There is no doubt that leadership within our organization will set the tone for the employees and overall operations within our department and community. “Leadership

If there is ever a question or concern do not hesitate to come converse with me. Since I am the new chief of police in a new department, I would like for each of my employees to stop by my office within the first week to introduce themselves so that we may become acquainted. I consider the relationship and interaction between leaders and subordinates to be vital to our success. Based on the behavioral studies and the managerial grid, I am equally concerned with my staffs needs along with production. Even though I strongly believe in leader-member relations, we must all be held accountable within our department in order to effectively protect and serve the community. Most of the officers have children that reside and attend schools locally. While in the office we should look to handle communication and mannerisms in a professional fashion. When developing informal communication skills, “communication networks are important for efficient and effective operations in criminal justice agencies.” (Stojkovic, 2015, pg. 112) Proper communication skills should be practiced both internally and externally between departments. We have recently seen the major role that sharing information can play with the attacks of 9/11. Had we had better communication and protocol, that catastrophic event could have been negated and avoided. As technology has advanced in previous years communication efficiency has also increased. “The internet is a global interconnection of computers operating independently.
