Police Executive Style Analysis

The review of the police executive styles was certainly thought provoking, all four styles have pros and cons in my opinion. The administrator style focuses on the internal workings of the police department with a profound focus on providing staff with training, equipment, as well as technology (Cordner, 2016). Additionally, the administrator style places emphases on education, which is vitally important. The focus on the internal facets of the police department can have a negative effect on the community in general. The community may feel as though their needs are not being met with a department that is fully focused within.

The top cop style is also appealing with respects to being involved on the front lines alongside the staff (Cordner, 2016). This style focuses on being an example for other officers, consequently, it could lead to the neglecting of operational responsibilities. The style places an emphasis on gaining the support of the community members as well as other political groups that may have an impact on the funding as well as the level of support for the department. This style is generally not favored by police staff due to a lack of focus on their needs within the department, moreover, a feeling of distrust may be felt due to the political nature of the command.

The statesman style is a chief for all, both the community as well as the staff of the department (Cordner, 2016). This approach has the ability to transcend between a leader for the people and a leader for the police staff. The statesman has been noted to take extreme actions to solve ordinary situations.
