When the police force was adopted by our government it was meant to protect the citizens of the United States. In the north, the police officers focused on collecting taxes and enforcing community rules. However, in the south the police force was used to keep slaves in order. This includes but is not limited to the electric chair, hanging, lethal injection and torture. I think that it is inhumane and barbaric of us as a society to uphold punishments like the death penalty. I believe there are a lot of different ways that society can handle its criminals that does not have to lead to the death of that person. My primary reasoning for my views is because there are countless individuals sentenced on death row who after years of appeals and even after their death, were found innocent of the crime they were convicted of. Sentencing individuals to life in prison could change the way people are treated who committed crimes in this country. With this simple change I believe that it will be a small step to changing the laws of this land that will lead to the change of the police
