The most commonly used non-lethal weapon police are accused of using more often than they should is the electronic control device or Taser. Second to the Taser is Oleoresin Capsicum or OC spray which is less harmful than a Taser but is also used more frequently than needed. OC spray is also often used incorrectly by attempting to subdue one person but sprayed into a crowed affecting many people who are not involved in the situation. The deployment of a Taser has been found to be the “go to” weapon even when it is not necessary. It has replaced the use of communication between suspect and officer. Rather than talk someone into compliance, the Taser is utilized in many situations where it is not needed. This device when used properly has a very low relationship to any serious health effects. Though, since 2005 the device has been the root of approximately 500 deaths related to the prolonged exposer a subject has with the effects of a Taser. The misuse of the Taser during some deployments have injured not only the suspect but the police officer as well. In one particular incident reported by the media an officer reportedly exposed a suspect to the effects of a Taser more than seven times in a fourteen minute time period.
