A large amount of controversy can be found in the world of law enforcement and their actions in diverse communities. Many people assume police officers act differently depending on who they are working with. Over the past few years especially, numerous cases have been brought to the public’s attention and this is now more of an issue than ever before. It will continue to be a problem as more minorities live in the United States and as law enforcement will always uphold a large societal role. The question here becomes “Are police community relations different between minorities and non-minorities?” Today, many communities are exceptionally diverse so this question remains valid for more than just a handful of people. Regarding law enforcement and different races, police act in similar ways, causing police community relations to be alike among minorities and non-minorities, even if racial profiling is believed to be present. For example, common stereotypes often associated with African American males is that they are aggressive and very violent by nature. So, let’s say a police officer pulls a car over for speeding down a city street at night. The officer goes up to the window and sees a black male driving the car. This officer is by no means racist and even has some African Americans in their family by marriage. That does not stop the implicit bias thoughts from automatically popping into his head. As these thoughts of violence and aggressiveness runs through their mind, the officer suddenly acts in an unnecessary manner.
