Police Cameras Pros And Cons

In recent years it has become increasingly harder for the public to trust police officers. This being said, many have tried ways to improve the complicated relationship between the two. The newest attempt included the introduction of body-worn cameras to policing communities. The public and police relationship does benefit from this product, but also includes influential disadvantages. Police body-worn cameras are starting to impose a great deal of issues. Issues such as privacy breaches, cameras being used incorrectly and proactive use of the collected information.

In particular, many privacy groups are growing increasingly concerned by the use of body-worn cameras inside of residences. These groups argue that people do not want their personal or embarrassing moments being captured for others to see (Gillis, 2015). It is a common concern for people to be conscious of their appearance, their mannerisms and what their homes look like. This new piece of technology in the policing world seems to have brought intimidation along with it; some of the general public have reported police officers wearing body cameras becoming less approachable (Bear & Rieken, 2014). It is felt that this issue could be damaging relations in the community, as the police rely on the public in many significant ways. If people are reluctant to associate with the police it could impose a greater strain rather than resolution (Bear & Rieken, 2014).

In conclusion, although the introduction to police worn-body cameras have many good qualities, the issues related can deter the fragile relationship.
