Police Brutality against African Americans In today's society society, it seems like history is repeating itself when it comes to police brutality against African Americans. To begin, there is a never ending trend of a Caucasian police officer or man who commits a crime and receives no time in jail for his wrong. There is one specific case that stands out to me, it is the Eric Garner Case. “Eric Garner was approached by New York Police for allegedly selling black market cigarettes. As part of the effort to handcuff and arrest Garner, an officer named Daniel Pantaleo places him in a choke hold. Garner was brought to the ground, where he repeatedly told the officers, “I can't breathe”. He later died” (Horowitz) When I started looking …show more content…
I feel like when a human being is in a certain position of power such as a police officer, they think that they are invincible. They think that they can abuse authority and get by with a slap on the wrist. So far, with the many cases we have come across in the last few years, the assailant (who is almost always caucasian) has gotten off for committing the murder of someone who was innocent. Personally, I do not think that is right. If you commit a crime such as murder you deserve to do the time for it no matter what position you hold. I am starting to get tired of hearing about cases where justice for African Americans is not served. I am tired of seeing the families of these victims in shambles. It is really starting to get ridiculous, how many cases like this one does there need to be until the right thing is done. Is this really going to make a difference? Does this cause havoc? I think that the protests make a huge difference. No, it cannot change a verdict that has already been made but, I think that it raises awareness. It shows the families of cases like these, that they are not alone. It shows them that people from different places around the world are protesting for the justice that should have been served. Believe it or not, it brings certain communites together as well. Sometimes cases like these cause havoc, but we cannot let what the jury decided get to us. We have to remember to keep things peaceful. Taking a protest to the extremes, can end a lot of people injured and that is not what a protest is for. You can still get your point across without being violent, and I think that some people do not understand that. They think that making a huge scene and breaking things is going to solve something and that is not true. Doing things that are uneccesarry to get your point across is going to leave bad message. People will think that when another case like this happens it will begin and end in a violet protest. When the main goal is to leave a good
