John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell presents how police corruption and brutality was a major influence in the perpetualization of racism in America during the civil rights era and even today. They do this by not being afraid to pull any punches or censor anything in the art style and literary readings of March. March goes through the life of John Lewis and his struggle to be a leader in a time of great adversity. The story follows through his life as he becomes chairman of the SNCC and lives on to be one of America’s greatest unsung political heroes. One of the examples used in March to (quite literally) illustrate how police corruption and integrated systemic racism effected the American mindset was the “supposed” homicide and subsequent…
Throughout the past years, police brutality incidents have recently been reoccurring themes in news headlines. For example, there were the shooting of Michael Brown and Walter Scott as there were many more unfortunate occurrences. I do not understand why these events still occur which explains for the creation of the Black Lives Matters movement. However, protests are not always the correct way to resolve violence. There has to be a compromise where there is an equal stance between police officers and citizens.…

1921: Tulsa Race Riot Although the 1950’s and 1960’s were known for racial riots, the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot was the worst in American history. It was one of the worst because this riot involved planes that were made for WW1, and some policeman, instead of protecting the people, joined the riot.…
Police brutality is becoming a major problem in today’s society. It has been an ongoing issue throughout the world. As society grows, the existence of police brutality become more of an issue. In the Summer of 2013, the Black Lives Matter movement came to fruition in the wake of George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, a young and unarmed black male. Since then, the movement has demonstrated against other deaths of many black men believed to have been victims of police brutality. Despite the scrutiny behind police practices such as the chokehold and racial profiling, which are both deemed illegal, the police have not changed these practices and instead made them legal under different names such as the “headlock” and the “drug courier profile”. In response to the Black Lives Matter movement and the 2014 killings of NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, the Blue Lives Matter movement was created. Instead…
As a group we believe that the tipping point of police brutality was the Rodney King beating which happened in Los Angeles, California. This event that happened in Los Angeles, California, took place on March 3rd, 1991. It happened, because he was on a high speed chase with the Los Angeles police department. When the officers stopped King they pulled him out of his car and brutally beat him. There were four L.A.P.D officers that were involved and they were sitting on charges of "assault with a deadly weapon and excessive use of force by a police officer" (Biography.com).…

Societal trends similar to that of the Newark Riots are still occurring today and affecting so many people that will share experiences and stories to that of Lester. One of the most significant societal trends has been police brutality, especially of unarmed African Americans. The Newark Riots began with the brutality that John Smith experienced at the hands of the Newark Police department. In 2014, nearly 47 years later, riots broke out in Ferguson, Missouri after police fatally shot Michael Brown. Looting and vandalism occurred, leading to the ever growing Black Lives Matter movement.…
Police Brutality on African America’s in America “Can we all just get along”? The words of Rodney King while he was being brutally beaten by law enforcement. Today we still see a lot of racism, just in many different forms. Racial profiling has been a big epidemic sense the 70's. Being an African American in the wrong area at the wrong time could become deadly for a young black man.…
At the point when a black thinks about a cop what ought to ring a bell is "legend". Cops should be an indication of safety, when a cop comes around a black individual ought to feel comfortable and secured. Although a few years ago it was this way it is no longer true. Present day's cops are seen as individuals that African Americans need to avoid, many black people fear them. Cops are currently manhandling, attacking, and executing guiltless African Americans, this is what I call police brutality against African Americans.…
Police Brutality in America has become a new plague, it has infiltrated our country, and has exposed a dark side of the justice system. Thousands of cases involving police brutality are reported yearly, and thousands of incidents go unreported as well. Incidents of police brutality go unreported because of fear. The American justice system is being ran by fear, causing uncertainty for citizens of America. The terrifying idea of waking up to a news report stating that a person has died at the hands of a police officer for no logical or specified reason has become a reality in modern day America.…
The killing Latasha Harlins added even more to the racial tension that was amplifying in Los Angeles. Black Americans played a keen role inside the 1992 Los Angeles race riots. Many were angered by the unfair treatment served both to Rodney King and Latisha Harlins, and the lack of justice they received. Black Americans in turn revolted because they were immensely discontent with the unjust treatment they faced. Being that there was turmoil between the Black American and Asian American population, many black riots decided to trash the businesses of many Asian Americans.…
Over the last century, police instigated or participated in race riots in many different cities. Because of the behavior of police, it encouraged hostility and violence towards minorities. However, over the past fifty years, things had begun to change. Legislation and U.S. Supreme Court cases became inspired by the civil rights movement and other reform movements which led to the discrimination based upon race unconstitutional. Law enforcement policies and practices placed better emphasis on professionalism and accountability.…
One aspect of police profiling that has received a great deal of attention in the news lately, although it has been a problem for many years, is racial profiling, when a police officer targets people based on their skin color or ethnic background (“Racial Profiling: Definition”). Often, people respond to this through riots, such as in 1992, when Rodney King was beaten down by four police officers. Even though this event was captured on video, the officers involved were acquitted of any wrongdoing. A six-day riot followed, totalling in over one billion dollars in damages. There has also been a number of smaller scale riots and protests recently as a result of racial…
