Disrespect and disobeying is a large problem that America faces, especially with the younger generations. People are always disrespecting others and in result of that, people are becoming more immune to it. As a kid I was always told by my father “police are your friends, they are there to protect you, never be afraid of them, and always obey them.” The advice from my father has an impact on how I treat an officer. I personally think of them as my friends, and I know they would lay their life down to protect mine. If everyone was told at a young age that a police officer is your friend, and that they should always obey them, then as the child grows older they would be more apt to listen and respect the officer when he/she gives commands. If an officer says to “get down,” or “put your hands in the air,” then the suspect should do so, but if the suspect chooses not to listen, then he/she is bringing more harm and pain upon themselves. People should be taught to obey everyone, including police officers at all times. A local example of a man disobeying officers commands is the incident that happened in 2003, in Christiansburg, Virginia. Officer Scott Hylton was looking for a shoplifter, and upon arriving to the scene of the crime he was attacked and knocked to the ground by Chris Holmes. Holmes took possession of Officer Hylton's patrol weapon and proceeded to shoot and kill Officer Hylton. Time passed and other patrol officers arrived at the scene. As the incident went on, Holmes was asked multiple times to put the gun down, but every time he refused. Eventually Holmes was shot and killed by officers. Criminal Holmes could have kept from having his life taken if he would have listened to the officers when they first commanded him to put down the gun. Christiansburg Police were not at fault for that incident because when the officers arrived, Holmes had ahold of a gun, and was threatening many of the officers
