The Civil Rights Movement focused solely on decompressing racial issues including segregation, which as a result sparked multiple issues between African Americans and Caucasian police officers. It has set a standard that police officers need to use excessive force to get criminals to comply with their request. Excessive force in most cases are absolutely unnecessary and in today’s generation of police officers it seems to be a trend, which defaces the critical relationship between law enforcement officials and the communities they police. Excessive force from the zero-tolerance policy is now being defined as police brutality (Umbach 2003). Police brutality is the basis for the current ‘Civil Rights’ campaign known as "Black Lives Matter" which has sparked continuous civil unrest among black communities in the 21st century. Police brutality has destroyed trust between police officers and citizens, casuing a lack of respect towards police officers. That is why community policing needs to be reborn, revolutionized, and reintroduced into all communities. Since police brutality became a major issue in the United States, the amount of assaults and disrespect towards police officers have tripled to 58,930 over the past decade. Fatalities among police officers have also increased by 10% when compared to the yearly average of 99 from 2014 (Officer Fatality Data). These statistics show that criminals have become more actively violent towards law enforcement due to the current amount of tension between the two. Something needs to be
