On August 14th 2016, NFL player Colin Kaepernick began the protest of police brutality against black Americans by sitting during the national anthem. Colin Kaepernick announced to the public why he was not standing during the anthem during a press conference “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people, and people of color.” On August 12th 2017, the protests started back up when Marshawn Lynch sits for the anthem during the preseason. After Lynch protests, more protests and on September 24th the Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers all stayed in their locker rooms. This has been recorded as “the largest protest the NFL has ever seen.” The NFL players have every right to take a knee during the nation anthem because they are spreading awareness about the issue of police brutality. …show more content…
It also shows police have killed 210 black people in 2017. Players are going to continue to protest because “They are protesting the loss of their community and the complete absence of condemnation from our judicial system” NFL have a right to kneel and should not be punished for having a legal form of peaceful protest (which is a First Amendment right). While the president wants the NFL players who kneel to be fired for disrespecting veterans who served our country and for breaking a league rule that says “they must appear on sidelines during the national.” This rule doesn’t exist and the NFL are not breaking any rules since they are allowed to have peaceful
