Each year thousands of reports occur involving some sort of police brutality. Police brutality has been in the media for some time now. The media has altered viewpoints of every person in the nation, but could police brutality actually be going on? The legal definition of police brutality is “a civil rights violation that occurs when a police officer acts with excessive force by using an amount of force with regards to a civilian that is more than necessary”. Police brutality is when in any situation a civilian is harmed due to force by a police officer. Police brutality is a huge issue that must be brought to people’s attention. Police are not anything, but regular people doing their jobs. They should not receive anything special or act in any special way. Police have a duty to protect not kill innocent people who do not deserve that. The media is doing a great job in showing communities that police violence needs to be addressed. “The public’s perception of victims, criminals, deviants, and law enforcement officials is largely determined by their portrayal in the mass media” (Dowler). The media makes people think twice when developing an idea about something. By using police brutality as a negative point, most people are turning negative toward police. It is a natural process for humans to do and it’s the reason why the media does what it does.
