Who Should Have Access to Police Body Camera Footage? Technology is on the rise and so is police brutality, but with one we may be able to remedy the other. Police body cameras have been in use in certain police departments across America since 2012. Ever since the controversial death of Mr. Michael Brown the idea of body cameras has exploded into a legal race for control over videos that don 't yet exist. There are a spectrum of views regarding the public’s access to these videos which the LA Times eloquently sums up in their article “When it comes to police body cameras, the public can 't be kept in the dark.” In this article the LA Times lays down this bottom line: “police agencies should not have carte blanche to decide whether these recordings …show more content…
The LA Times offered the incredibly astute observation that “While it’s distasteful to think about that footage showing up on YouTube, important decisions about who gets to see body camera video should not be made by grieving family members.” (LA Times) The flaw in this bill is pointed out perfectly in this sentence. This is the grim side of the future. As more and more of our world gets videotaped and recorded the ugly side of the world gets a proportionate amount of screen time. As unfortunate as it is there is no shortage of death recorded on the internet. There is no point in blocking out the only death-sensitive videos that could actually help the world. Those who could be emotionally harmed by these events should not be subjected to them, but these videos have proven to be one of the most useful tools that the police departments have ever put into use. These videos could easily be used to condemn the killer of a police officer in any of these cases. The biggest thing that this bill can do is let a cop-killer walk out of custody when there is video proof of the killing. This should not stand as an acting

As a resident who supports law enforcement, I am writing for your support of SB 418, law enforcement body cameras. Supporting it would allow the proper use of body cameras; requiring the data recorded to be retained according to specific requirements. The bill benefits police officers and civilians. The officers protect civilians; however, body cameras would give officers more encouragement to stay within the rules and regulations. Body cameras will help reduce finger-pointing and false accusations.…

Summary The article, “Police Body Cameras” written on May 28, 2016 is about police wearing body cameras. The article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of police wearing body cameras while on duty. Many civilians died at the hands of police and without any footage of what transpire between the police and the civilian/civilians then the justice system will give the police the right. However, persons think that the presence of body camera will not change anything as the justice system will be in favor of police, for example, Garner an African American was selling cigarettes illegally, and he died from asphyxiation after he was put in a chokehold by the officer.…

For example, when an officer’s body camera is turned on, and the officer comes at them or intimidates them while being recorded, could imply that the victim is in the wrong, as a result, and may be subjected to either fight back or argue with the officer, only escalating the interaction. As an officer it is up to them to deem what necessary action to take and decide what to do in certain situations, and reinforcing the requirement of body cameras, the officer will have to uphold the law specifically, and can put the lives of the officer or victim in danger. “Body cameras, critics argue, have the potential to tilt the balance of power even further in favor of law enforcement to the detriment of the public”…

In his essay “For Cops…” Kevin Johnson claims that videos of police officers are placing their actions under new scrutiny and changing the way that claims against officers are played out in court. Police have responded by trying to limit such recordings when they feel that they interfere with police actions. The fear that is most present in law enforcement is that these videos will cause officers to change how they behave in a life or death situation. To combat this, officers are now receiving training to deal with being recorded.…

With all the police brutality claims now there is so much controversy over police officers wearing body cameras. Some people feel that the officers should wear the cameras so that there will be a video of everything happening and there will be proof of what is going on between the officers and the civilians. Other people do not want the cameras because it violates people’s privacy. This has been an ongoing debate for a while now. In this essay I want to show some of the benefits for the body cameras.…

Throughout the past 10 years there has been many talks on whether the police should be required to wear body cameras. Throughout all the research and studies regarding these cameras, these have been many pros to body cams but there have also been cons and many challenges to implementing this system in police forces throughout the country. Many different police stations have done experiments with these cameras and have all shown very positive feedback. Regardless of the amount of work necessary to implement these cameras, it should be necessary for officers to wear these body cameras because they have the potential to save lives. To go along with that, police should be forced to wear these body cameras because they have the potential to save lives, give better representation than hearing a testimony, and make suspects less likely to run or attack an officer because everything they do is caught on camera.…

Unfortunately over the past year feud has surfaced all over the world on if police officers should be required to wear body cameras while on duty. Specifically so everything that happened in an incident can be recorded. “When something happens, to have a video record of it, from the police officers’ perspective, is going to help in many, many ways,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “And God forbid, when something goes wrong, we are going to have a clearer sense of what happened.” Due to recent tragic events such as the passing of Eric Garner and Michael who both were killed by policeman, and neither officer was indicted many feel that it is necessary for all police officers to wear body cameras, to eliminate unfairness and unjustness.…

“A young black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri, was shot and killed by a police officer in 2014, because of this, and the jury’s decision to not punish the officer, people in the community and across the country erupted in protest which caused the community leaders to order the police officers to wear body cameras.” Police officers should be obligated to wear body cameras for the well-being of the public and the officers themselves. There has been many cases where officers have used excessive amounts of force when dealing with people, cases such as Walter Scott in North Charleston, and the death of Freddie Gray. Officers are too easily let go for things like police brutality, at most the police officers will get a slap on wrist and a “Don’t…

This is a reason why the states should have police body cameras on all the officers. It started with that situation about Michael Brown and Liz Fields states that having police body cameras we will have more evidence of what actually happened and if there was any good evidence of why the officer shot him. Another reason is that these police body cameras would have prevented Michael Brown’s death because the officer would know that he is being recorded and he would act in a different way and behaved better. Also body cams can be a way that people would be acting different way against officers because they would know that they are being recorded and they won’t do anything stupid to get them in a big…

Third and even more importantly, police should wear body cameras because it prevents violence. Researchers at the University of South Florida released a report about a year long study of police wearing cameras. From March 2014 to February 2015, 46 officers wore cameras while 43 did not. Use-of-force incidents dropped 53 percent among the officers with cameras (Wing 2015). This study is trying to prove that the cameras have had a great outcome when used.…

Two of my sources talked about cameras in relation to police brutality, but took different sides. In a PBS News article, it mentions how Alton Sterling’s girlfriend caught his death on video from the passenger seat. The video found its way onto TV, and this stirred up a lot of emotions for people. People talk and try to figure out what’s going on and praise the fact that some of these situation get caught on camera (cell phones, body cams, dash cams) because that’s all the proof you need in cases of police misconduct (Social Media Plays Major Role in National Debate on Police Violence). In a Rachel Maddow video, she also discussed body cams and dash cams, but for a different reason.…
