The Importance Of Police Body Camera

Police body cameras have evolved substantially in the past few years. Originally the cameras were put on the officer’s dash, instead of being equipped on the officer. Today, these cameras are used more often than they used to be. Most police body cameras are still in the pilot stage, but are coming along quickly. Some people don’t agree with the police body cameras because they view it is an invasion of privacy. However, police should wear body cameras at all times not only to ensure the safety of themselves and others, but as well as prevent many court cases by providing video evidence of a crime. Police body cameras have not had complete approval to be used nationally, but in-car police cameras have been used for years and have been reported to help in court. These cameras have been on a trial run in France for about three years ("Boring"). The people analyzing the trial run say that in the long run it helps when it comes to disputes between the police and the public. Police officers have been very welcoming to the idea of having to wear the body cameras ("Boring"). Boring said that the French prime minister announced that all of their policemen will soon be required to wear body cameras as apart of their uniforms ("Boring"). "The measure is touted as a way not only to prevent police misconduct and racial profiling, but also to protect police officers from challenges to their accounts of interactions with individuals and from violence" says Boring (“Boring”). He is saying that by using the cameras policemen can be watched to make sure they treat everybody the same, in hopes of preventing discrimination claims.
